APA Convention and Florida Behavioral Health Conference Welcome PracticeWise Team Members as Presenters

It began in your undergraduate studies when you were required to write research papers in APA style.  That may have been your first introduction to the American Psychological Association.  Now you are well into your career and attending the APA Convention.  Both the APA Convention (APA 2023) and the Florida Behavioral Health Conference have an exciting lineup of speakers this year addressing cutting-edge interventions and evidence-based practices in mental health.  If you plan to attend either or both of these conferences, then this article will give you a sneak peek at what to expect from some of the presenters and get you excited to attend these informative, insightful conferences.

PracticeWise is excited to announce that three of our team members will be presenting at  APA 2023 this year.   Our training team that is presenting at APA 2023,  will also be presenting at the Florida Behavioral Health Conference.  This is a distinguished honor, and we are proud to have been chosen to contribute to such important meetings of the minds in the psychological and behavioral health world.

APA 2023 is being held in Washington, D.C., August 3-5.  It is three days of leaders in the field presenting information that you won’t want to miss.  The convention also offers the opportunity to earn Continuing Education for mental health professionals.  The Florida Behavioral Health Conference will be held in Orlando, Florida, August 16-18. It is four days of various presenters covering a broad spectrum of ideas. This conference is also offering Continuing Education for mental health professionals.  You do not want to miss out on the opportunity to hear all these amazing speakers!

Dr. Bruce Chorpita – Keynote Speaker at APA 2023

Our Co-founder and President, Dr. Bruce Chorpita, will be a keynote speaker at APA 2023.  He will be addressing Division 53 – Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology.  His keynote speech will focus on Therapeutic Intelligence (TI).  According to Dr. Chorpita, “The annual APA convention serves as a vital platform for our field to come together, share knowledge, and foster collaboration to improve the lives of those we serve. During my talk this year, we will take a look at some of our existing orthodoxies and envision innovative ways to transform our collective knowledge into ‘therapeutic intelligence’ (TI). This concept revolves around empowering individuals to effectively utilize evidence-based practices to improve the mental health of themselves and others. Leveraging our long-standing efforts in clinical science, this visionary approach will move us toward a future where TI plays a pivotal role in improving the well-being of children, families, and communities.”

August 3-4, prior to speaking at APA 2023, Dr. Chorpita will be attending a private meeting of professionals to discuss solutions to improving the mental health system in the U.S.  This meeting, The Omaha Meeting on Behavioral Health Services Innovation and Adaptation, will allow mental health advocates, practitioners, and scientists to discuss the problems facing our mental health system and formulate specific solutions.  Conclusions from this meeting will be made public.

PracticeWise’s Training and Development Team – Workshop Presenters at APA 2023 and Florida Behavioral Health Conference

Dr. Aparajita Kuriyan and Dr. Allison Love will be presenting a workshop at APA 2023.  The workshop is titled, “Getting Unstuck When Youth Don’t Progress:  Innovative Clinical Decision-Making Tools and Paradigms.”  The session will focus on innovative decision-making frameworks and tools to support evidence-informed treatment adaptations in light of limited client progress.  Using case examples, participants will practice applying this framework to arrive at a hypothesis for a youth’s limited progress and consider targeted solutions.

  • Learning Objectives
    • Use a decision-making framework to identify at least three possible reasons for limited client progress and generating targeted responses.
    • List three intervention strategies found in youth treatment studies and describe how results can inform individualized treatment planning and adaptation.

At the Florida Behavioral Health Conference, Dr. Kuriyan and Dr. Love will be presenting a workshop titled, “Navigating the Research Gap: Designing Evidence-Informed Treatments for Underrepresented Problems and Populations.”  This interactive session will demonstrate how a concrete, actionable decision-making framework (the Evidence-Based Services (EBS) System Model) integrates four sources of information, including treatment outcome literature, local data, theoretical research, and the youth’s personal history in order to inform key clinical decisions. This framework was specifically designed to be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of local providers and populations and has been implemented and refined over two decades across multiple states and systems of care. As part of learning to use this framework, attendees will be introduced to a method for systematically distilling evidence-based treatment protocols into their individual intervention strategies. The distillation and aggregation of strategies create a profile summarizing the common treatment strategies for a given target area (e.g., substance use, depression, anxiety). Instead of learning an array of single-target evidence-based treatments, this method allows providers to identify and become adept at a manageable number of ‘core’ intervention strategies common to many well-supported interventions.
