Helping Youth and Families Understand Mental Health Together
Youth mental health continues to be one of the most pressing challenges of our time. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 in 5 children in the United States experience a mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder each year. National trends show that depression among adolescents has increased steadily over the past decade, with data indicating higher prevalence rates since 2010 and continued growth through 2023.
Behind these numbers are real youth and families working to understand what they are experiencing, and providers striving to share information that is clear, supportive, and hopeful.
That is where psychoeducation comes in. Psychoeducation is a cornerstone of effective behavioral health practice because it bridges understanding, builds trust, and empowers youth and families to engage meaningfully in care.
Two New Courses to Strengthen How We Talk About Mental Health
Our collection of On-Demand courses has expanded to include Psychoeducation and Psychoeducation: Depression, two new offerings designed to help providers deliver information about mental health concerns in ways that are evidence-informed, developmentally appropriate, and family-centered.
Psychoeducation provides a broad overview of how to share information about youth well-being, behavioral health concerns, and effective treatments. It highlights health behaviors like sleep, nutrition, physical activity, and social engagement—key areas that play a powerful role in mental health and resilience.
Psychoeducation: Depression builds on this foundation, offering practical strategies for talking with families about what depression looks like in youth, what causes it, and what effective treatments and services may involve. This course also emphasizes how to turn complex or clinical information into conversations that promote hope and collaboration.
Together, these courses help providers, educators, and caregivers strengthen communication, reduce stigma, and foster understanding.
Why This Matters: From Awareness to Action
Talking about mental health can be uncomfortable for families, youth, and even professionals. Clear, strengths-based communication helps build understanding and confidence, allowing families to feel more supported and engaged in their child’s care.
These courses were created to make that process easier. Both Psychoeducation and Psychoeducation: Depression:
- Offer frameworks for how to explain mental health concerns and treatment options in ways families can understand and trust.
- Provide practical examples across diverse youth characteristics and settings.
- Encourage developmentally appropriate, family-centered approaches to treatment conversations.
The Psychoeducation: Depression course also reflects a growing emphasis within PracticeWise on strengths-based communication, an approach that helps families focus on what is working, not just what is wrong.
